PSA for dancers, dance enthusiasts, and people of earth in general.
THERE IS NO "right"body type for belly dance. There is YOUR personal preference for what body type YOU think looks best, and that's great, you are entitled to your opinions, go watch and admire the body type dancing the type of dance that you enjoy, but no one "needs" a certain type of body to be able to dance. While I appreciate when someone comments on a dance video in response/defense to someone declaring that the dancer is too fat, too thin, or too muscular, please note that belly dancers aren't "supposed" to look any one particular way, they're not supposed to be curvy, or thin, or fat, or have big bellies, or flat stomachs. This is a redundant as "real women have curves".
No. Real women have bodies, in a large variety of shapes, sizes, colours and combinations, excess or minimal fat, or curve, or shape, doesn't make you any more or less of a woman. Didem and Sadie have incredibly different styles of dance, with incredibly different body frames and guess what? They are both real women that are incredibly accomplished in their chosen style and field. We don't need to put down one body type to validate another, this just reiterates that our bodies are here to look at for their perceived attractiveness, not their skill. Don't get me wrong I like looking at a body that I personally find attractive, that's called being human, but I still watch and appreciate the skill of an individual even when their body isn't my type. That should just be common sense. This applies to male bodies as much as female bodies. What you do require to dance (professionally) is the right fitness level, not the right body type, and fit is going to look a little different from dancer to dancer. And to those who feel the need to address the weight of both slender and larger individuals, FYI that's not your job. That's their health care professional's job.
STOP making it about how the body looks statically, it should be about how the body moves, the technique, the athleticism, the musicality, the strength, the feeling. It's not about being beautiful, it's about the skill. The work. THE HOURS, AND HOURS OF WORK AND SWEAT that went into "shaking that belly fat". The beauty is in the ability and the big picture, not the reflection.
Chances are if you're sitting there deciding how a professional's body SHOULD look instead of actually watching what they are doing, you have no idea what goes into actually doing what their doing. If you did, you'd probably be doing something yourself versus pontificating your insecurities under the guise of ideals.
Seriously, you don't even know though.
